According to the Kelimutu National Park Agency (BTNK), last year the lakes changed colors six times! The color change has happened between January and November. The color change is by the way caused by a chemical reaction occurring in the mountain crater.

The color change of the three lakes do not affect volcanic activity though, according to the Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG) in Indonesia. Mount Kelimutu's status is considered normal and thus tourism in the destination remains unaffected.

Kelimutu lakes’ color changes are the highlight of the place that attracts domestic and foreign tourists. This year, it could change at anytime. So you better book a flight to see the color change for yourself!
