We will now have to get used to calling the red planet Bowie

Legendary rock star David Bowie had died 10 January after an 18-month long battle with liver cancer. Petitions have been launched in honor of the Starman singer to rename the red planet after him and to replace the face on the new £20 bank note with his.

The petition to put Bowie's face on the new bank note has gathered over 12,000 signatures in less than 24 hours. If he gets enough signatures, the rock star might replace Adam Smith, the Scottish economist and philosopher whose face was on the £20 bank note since 2010.

The petition reads: "We can think of no better way to honour David Bowie, who died on 10th January 2016, than by depicting him on the forthcoming £20 note."

Mark Carney, the governor of the Bank of England, announced in May that they were searching for someone from the field of visual arts to replace Smith. Although the poll officially closed in July, fans are hoping that the governor might make an exception for David Bowie who seems fitting for the criteria.

"There are a wealth of individuals within the field of visual arts whose work shaped British thought, innovation, leadership, values and society and who continue to inspire people today," said Mr Carney.

The new face of the bank note must be neither living nor fictional and can include architects, artists, ceramicists, craftspeople, designers, fashion designers, filmmakers, photographers, printmakers and sculptors.

The public can vote on the bank's website if they want to feature the person they want on the new bank note. Although the bank is asking the public to vote via its website for the individual they would like to be featured, Mr Carney will make the final decision alongside a panel that includes artist John Akomfrah, design writer Alice Rawsthorn, and critic Andrew Graham-Dixon.

Another Briton, Danny Rapscallion, gathered almost 4,000 signatures in his bid to have the planet Mars renamed after the Life on Mars singer.

"He gave us so much. A piece of the galaxy in return is just a drop in the universe." Rapscallion said.
