Creepy Theory

Now prepare to be mindblown.

Alan Rickman, Harper Lee, David Bowie and now Prince...in just a mere four months we've already witnessed these deaths among many other famous international stars and even local personalities here in the PH. News outlets such as BBC and The Daily Telegraph have reported a significant increase of up to 5-fold since 2012. In a report made by the BBC, Daily Telegraph maintains a gallery of famous people who have died, and updates it throughout the year. Up to this time in 2014, the number of those in the gallery was 38. By this time last year, the number of people in the gallery was 30. This year, the number is already 75. So let's drop the question- WHY?

Creepy Theory

The answer is The Baby-Boom Factor.

Set aside curse theories or raging epidemics- the pop music boom of the 1960s and the arrival of television from the mid-50s onward has increased massively the pool of household names. Many of those now dying belonged to the so-called baby-boom generation, born between 1946 and 1964, that saw a huge growth in population.People who started becoming famous in the 1960s are now entering their 70s and are starting to die; and that there are also more famous people than there used to be. Aside from television and the silver screen, think of Instagram, YouTube and streaming services such as Netflix. More and more emerging celebrities are being introduced but only few remain household names such as Prince and Bowie. These two along with Rickman, and even Victoria Wood were all baby boomers.

Sadly, this trend will continue as baby boomers will enter their 80s in the next 10 years also combined with the fact that many of these stars are under extra-stressful situations and (many) lead unhealthy lifestyles. But cheer up as the memories and works of these talents will still live on in our hearts forever.
