“Attention” by Charlie Puth

  • In the song, Charlie expresses his encounters with an ex-girlfriend who’s trying to tempt him to come back to her by playing with his emotions, though he knows she is just looking for attention and isn’t interested in a permanent relationship.
  • If you’re wondering  why Charlie's voice in the final pre-chorus broke, the answer is he “just got a little emotional”. He said, “I decided to keep the take of this. I was going to delete it, but I was like “screw it.” And it has an odd bar. It has a second of nothing. It’s cool.”
  • Did you know that this song was made in the Philippines? In an interview from Genius, the singer said, “When I came up with the song originally, I was on this hotel bed in this really cool room in the Philippines. I was just watching TV and kind of browsing through Instagram.” Charlie  said he found an Instagram post where somebody posted a story about how he had just broken up with his girlfriend. Charlie thought the girl in the story was only looking for attention and that’s how he came up with the idea of the song.

KNOCKER:

“First Time” by Kygo and Ellie Goulding

  • First Time” is a nostalgic track reminiscing young love. The song is a return to Kygo’s tropical house roots with steel drums and synthesized flutes.
  • This is the first time Kygo and Ellie Goulding collaborated. However, this isn’t the first time Kygo has experimented with Ellie’s vocals, having previously remixed her track “High For This” into a tropical house hit in 2013.
  • Some speculate that the song isn’t really about romantic love. Commentators say that when we hear the opening line “We were lovers for the first time”, we instantly think a couple, but they’re actually referring to siblings who were best friends.

GOSSIP

Frank Ocean is currently being sued by his own father 14 and a half million dollars in defamation damages. The singer’s father, Calvin Cooksey, cited Ocean’s Tumblr post from last year where he told the story of how his father called a transgender waitress a faggot. Ocean also said his father stormed out of the restaurant and said they can’t be served by someone “dirty”.  Cooksey denied the accusation of homophobia in his complaint. He said that it has “ruined” his “future financial opportunities in the film and music industries.”
