Thai Cuisine

Sweet, spicy and creamy- these flavors of Thailand will keep you coming back for more.

In all honesty, I have been stuck in a rut. There's too much burgers, chicken wings, pizza and Chinese food here in Cebu. While all these are very delicious (uh hello, more and more restaurant concepts are making quality burger patties), sometimes we look for something else aside Filipino, Western, Chinese and the usual cuisine available here.

Only few months ago I have tried Thai food- although I may not have been to Thailand to really taste their dishes, I've been really attracted to their tangy and spicy touch to their dishes. There are different popular Thai restaurants here in Cebu so consider reading on so you won't be intimidated to go inside these establishments:

Fresh (or fried) Spring Rolls

Spring Rolls thai cuisine

Who could not know about this lightweight yet filling dish? This is served as an appetizer and has the usual fresh rice noodles, cucumber, carrots, bean sprouts, cilantro and either some slices of shrimp or chicken. This is served with some peanut sauce which is made of peanuts (obviously) and coconut milk. Personally, I adore the peanut sauces served.

Khao Pad

Khao Pad

If you love the usual Pinoy or Chinese style fried rice, you'll love this. From what I read, ingredients will depend on which region in Thailand this dish is served because of seasonal ingredients and livestock. But the usual Khao Pad contains some sort of meat such as chicken, pork, beef, shrimp and crab, but can also be vegetarian. Common ingredients can include egg, onions, tomatoes, green onions, cilantro, fried garlic, soy sauce, salt, sugar, chili sauce and fish sauce.

Tom Yum

Tom Yum

This popular Thai dish is a spicy and sour soup that is typically made of lemon grass, lime leaves, lime juice, ginger, fish sauce and some chili. Usually this is served with prawns, fish and mixed seafood. Some also have chicken, mushrooms with a dash of cilantro.

Gaeng Khiao Wan

Gaeng Khiao Wan

Gaeng Khiao Wan is Thailand's very own curry- this roughly translates to "sweet green curry" and is made of coconut milk, green curry paste, aubergine, sugar, fish sauce, lime leaves and Thai basil. Green curry is served with many types of meat, but is most commonly served with beef, pork, chicken and seafood. There are also vegetarian variations of this too, as they contain mushrooms and tofu.

Pad Thai

Pad Thai

A personal favorite- this is their signature stir-fried noodle dish. This is made with of course, thick rice noodles (think fettuccine), eggs, fish sauce, tamarind juice, red chili pepper, bean sprouts and can be served with shrimp or chicken. From what I read there are two different varieties of Pad Thai- the version most typically found in Thailand is a lighter, drier version of the dish. The version found in most western countries is much more heavy and oily.
