Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Review

The movie was screened exclusively at Cinema 5 of Ayala Center Cebu. Despite it being a late screening, the theater was still jampacked with fans eager to watch a new Star Wars story come to play in the big screen.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is the movie that fills in the gap between Revenge of the Sith (Episode III) and A New Hope (Episode IV). It literally is the story from the opening crawl in the original Star Wars film and the ending in Rogue One literally happens just hours before the events in A New Hope.

In Rogue One, Jyn Erso, played by Felicity Jones, gets picked up by the Rebellion, who needs her help in a little mission to retrieve the blueprints of the newly built Death Star, a superdeath weapon that’s suppose to eradicate planets. The Rebellion seeks to retrieve the blueprints and plans of the Death Star in an attempt to find a vulnerable spot around it in order to destroy it.

The movie is the most grounded and realistic Star Wars film yet, thanks to the incredible special effects and the direction of Gareth Edwards, who is very good at making large things look awesome from the perspective of the characters on the ground. (I’m talking especially about the AT-AT walkers). Edwards’ previous works were Cloverfield and Godzilla, and now with Rogue One, he’s got another visually stunning and well-directed movie added in his impressive oeuvre.

We’ve seen Stormtroopers fight in the desert, in the snow, and now we’ve seen them fight in the beach. This particular sequence in the movie is probably the best in my opinion. This is the part where the movie was grounded in reality. It felt like a gritty war film, and it will make you forget that you’re watching a sci-fi fantasy.

The film also features gorgeous action set pieces with mind blowingly good CGI. I’m talking about the space battles, the stuff in the beach siege. The CG in the movie is virtually flawless that it feels completely seamless with the human characters, which helps to make the film look and film realistic.

Roge One: A Star Wars Story is a great addition to the Star Wars saga. It’s an enjoyable movie that is worth your ticket. The movie is still being screened at Ayala Malls Cinemas. So go out and see it now!
