Classic Smiths MV Shot-by- Shot with T-Pain

L.A. electro duo Classixx and T-Pain released a new song with a music video you’ve seen before.

The King of Autotune, T-Pain, channeling the beloved legendary baritone singer Morrissey? On the surface both singers look like they belong on opposite sides of the spectrum. But according to the music video director Daniel Pappas the relationship between the pair is not unlikely as it seems.

In an interview Pappas said of the music video of the new Classixx track Whatever I Want "The video was inspired by the song's attitude towards doing 'whatever I want,' T-Pain's well chronicled struggle with depression, the shared sadness of Smiths fans, and how, through all of the depression and sadness, when you look like Morrissey in whatever way you can, everything is going to be okay."

Morrissey, of course, was the vocalist and songwriting genius behind the 80’s rock band The Smiths. In 1987 the band released the music video to their song Stop Me If You Think You’ve Heard This One Before which features Morrissey leading a group of people on bicycles on the town of Salford.

29 years later, the Los Angeles electro duo Classixx with the help of T-Pain, recreate the classic music video in their new song Whatever I Want. A shot-by-shot recreation that replaces Moz with T-Pain and the not so summery location of Salford with the sun-dappled east L.A. The music video, shot on a GoPro, features basically the same elements from the 1987 Smiths video with T-Pain brooding rubbing his head, and looking off into the distance just like Moz. There are even updated denim jackets that say “CLASSIXX” instead of “THE SMITHS”.

Have fun comparing the two music videos!
