Tekken is a very popular game and is still taking over the arcade and console scene by storm!

So far, Tekken is the most popular 3D fighting game there is today. Its rival is most likely Street Fighter; however, Streetfighter is a 2D game which brings it into a different genre, so it can’t be compared to Tekken. For sure, all of the malls with arcades have this game and it’s easy to spot someone playing. You’ll never know when a friend dares you to challenge or worse, a new date tells you to beat someone in the arcade! Other situations maybe money matches with cousins and friends which happen almost all the time.

You are at an advantage, because we are more than happy to share some tips and tricks for non-Tekken players to show some skills. Here are some tips:

To start, you have to be familiar with the basic controls. The basic controls are applicable to all of the characters.  Observe the picture:

(up: an arcade stick; down: a ps3 controller)

Basically, 1 and 2 are punches while 3 and 4 are kicks. 1 and 3 uses the left (left punch and kick) while the 2 and 4 uses the right (right punch and kick). Pressing back means blocking the attack, thus giving you no damage, and pressing back and down at the same time will block low attacks. In the case of a stick, you may aim it to a diagonal back (half way between the back and down).

Now you know the basic controls, you may now punch and kick your opponent but that isn’t complete without grabs! Grabs are simple and difficult to break (even professional gamers still fail to break grabs and some even rely on it to get the win). If you want to grab, all you have to do is to press 1 and 3 together, or 2 and 4 together. Remember, the buttons must be pressed at the same time for the character to execute the move and make sure you can reach your opponent or the grab would be useless. To avoid grabs, all you have to do is press down to make your character crouch and avoid the grab.

Spamming:

This is a move which everyone hates (including some casual gamers) since it is difficult to defend or counter. Luckily, there are characters in Tekken which can be used by just mashing and spamming! Here are some:

Eddy/Christie:
Press button 3 and 4 infinitely like this: 3,4,3,4,3,4,3,4  ( take note, do not press together).

Hwoarang/Baek:
Press buttons 3 or 4 repetitively like this: 3,3,3,3,3,3,3 or 4,4,4,4,4,4,4

Alisa Bosconovitch:
Press buttons 1 and 2 ( 1+2) together repetitively like this: 1+2, 1+2, 1+2 or hold back and 3 and 4 together repetitively like this: Back 3+4, 3+4, 3+4 .

Asuka Jun:
You can just combine anything. They are easy characters and can execute moves even when you mash.

Now you have some ideas about Tekken. All you have to do now is apply it and with this basic knowledge, for sure you are going to win some. Get ready for the next battle!
