Since it’s summer and I thought people better learn something useful during the time of their vacation, I thought about free diving. However, I wasn’t so sure about that so I asked Carlow who happens to be a free diver.

Free diving is not for everyone, according to Carlow; because it may not be comfortable for those who are afraid of the deep water or have the fear of drowning. For him, diving is a kind of satisfaction in life that he gets to do once in a while when he is away from work or alleviate just about any problems he faces each day.

To be free underwater, so to speak”, Carlow adds.

Carlow explains that free diving is more of a discipline than a skill since it takes a bit of self-control like fighting his urge to go deeper. Because even if he thinks he can go deeper, he also knows that his body has its limits. It takes meditation and practice in order to be able to dive further by depth or improve your breath-holding skills.

Carlow was just a beach lover at first. He loved to put on the snorkel and swim near the surface to look down at the beautiful fishes and corals. He was introduced to free diving when his cousin brought him to Mactan to free dive. There, he learned how to equalize so he can go deeper than he has ever reached and now, he can go about 20-30 feet the most. He is not on the competitive side; he prefers to swim with the beautiful creatures under the sea.

There’s this difference by just looking at the sea creatures from snorkeling above.

When you try to be close to the ocean floor and swim at a certain depth, hearing nothing but the flow of water and the sound of the ocean, knowing that gravity isn’t controlling you, it really feels like your flying – but underwater. Haha!” Carlow expresses.
