China is Angry at Lady GaGa

Chinese fans are infuriated at Lady Gaga after she met with the Dalai Lama to talk about kindness.

Chinese social media users erupted in fury when they found out that Lady Gaga was meeting the Dalai Lama, the spiritual Tibetan leader who fled to India in exile after a failed uprising against the Chinese government in 1959.

The Chinese netizens took to Weibo (the Chinese Twitter/Facebook) and expressed their frustration over the Poker Face pop star.

"The way the Chinese feel is just like you were shaking hands with [Osama] bin Laden," said one user presumably addressing the singer.

Another user said: "This is proof that she can love and respect a Chinese terrorist. She fundamentally looks down on Chinese fans, and even all Chinese people."

Lady Gaga is one of, if not the most, popular western musician in mainland China. Her popularity in mainland China means that she is often a major talking point for entertainment and mainstream media there.

Her social media posts about meeting with the Tibetan spiritual leader on Sunday have led to online speculation over whether she will still be allowed to perform in the country.

A number of western acts have had their gigs cancelled in the last year, purportedly because of their links to the Dalai Lama.

In April 2016, Selena Gomez had her concert dates in China cancelled because she posted a picture of herself with the Dalai Lama.

Last September, Bon Jovi concerts in Shanghai and Beijing were also cancelled at the last minute, reportedly because the band featured the Dalai Lama in previous gigs.

And in July 2015, a Dalai Lama tweet by one member of Maroon 5 was widely believed to be the reason for the American band's cancelled Shanghai September tour.

US President Barack Obama met with the Dalai Lama at the White House earlier this month, despite a warning from China that it would damage diplomatic relations.
