The 23-year old American singer opens up about her struggle with depression, addiction, and eating disorder.

In an interview with American Way magazine, Demi Lovato revealed that she once thought her life would be cut short because of her bipolar disorder that worsened when she became a star.

Lovato explained that she suffered with bipolar disorder, or manic depression, since she was young. She also revealed that she struggled with body image too back since she was 3 years old. She watched both her mother and her grandmother suffer from bulimia, and she became even more body-conscious after participating in beauty pageants and breaking through the entertainment industry.

When she starred in the Disney movie Camp Rock at the age 15, she feared that she’d be the next Britney Spears or Lindsay Lohan, whose much-publicized meltdowns and downward spiral mental health were trending at the time.

After her acting and singing career took off and her star power grew, Lovato’s depression worsened and so she soon started cutting herself and drinking heavily. She also started to do drugs like cocaine and OxyContin.

I lived fast and I was going to die young,” she told the magazine. “I didn’t think I would make it to 21.”

Lovato got into rehab and was diagnosed with bulimia and manic depression. It was a tough road for Lovato, but thanks to rehabilitation, and the support of her ex-boyfriend Wilbur Valderrama and the singer’s countless fans, Lovato managed to stay sober for four years.

“When I have meet-and-greets, I can’t tell you the amount of times that girls will show me their arms covered in scars or cuts,” she said. “They’ll tell me, ‘You helped me get through this. Because of you, I stopped self-harming,’ or ‘I got sober.’ Hearing those things gave my life new meaning.
