China Bans Betting on Taylor Swif

Apparently the Chinese online market was offering Swift fans “insurance policies” in case of a Hiddleswift break-up.

Your car insurance covers you in a car accident. When you unexpectedly end up in the hospital, hopefully your medical insurance can cover the cost for the bill. But what about if Taylor Swift breaks up with her new boyfriend, are you in good hands?

Well, thanks to Taobao, China's biggest online marketplace, Swifties can now purchase "breakup insurance."

However, recently, fans hoping to hedge their heartbreak by insuring against the, dare I say, the inevitable downturns in the pop star's love life are now out of luck. As of Wednesday, June 29, Taobao blocked searches for Hiddleswift insurance offers.

People who searched for a Taylor Swift break-up insurance in Taobao received the message, "According to laws and regulations, what you have searched for cannot be displayed." Similar offers that allowed users to place bets on whether Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom will stay together, or whether if Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton will become the next United States President this November, have also been removed.

These “insurance” schemes – which is legal in China – are not actually offering users real insurance, but rather offered them an opportunity to gamble. Gambling, aside from two state-sanctioned lotteries, is officially illegal in mainland China.
